My son passed away 8 years ago. We used part of his life insurance for his funeral, and Met Life placed the rest in a total control account. We’ve been trying to reach them for months to withdraw the remaining money, but they won’t return our calls or emails. Does anyone have advice on what we can do next?
Who exactly are you calling, and what happens when you try to get in touch? You might want to check your state’s unclaimed property listings.

We’re calling the number on the quarterly account summary. We can only leave a message when we try to call them.
@Darcy
Try sending an email through their general customer service page on their website. If that doesn’t work, you could also send a physical letter to someone higher up. Address it to:
Monica Curtis, Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer
200 Park Ave, New York City, New York, 10166
Explain your situation politely and ask for help. She might not see it herself, but someone from her office will, and they could get it to the right department.
What exactly is a ‘Total Control Account’? Never heard of that before.

Here’s a link with info: What Is a MetLife Total Control Account?
Why wait 8 years to withdraw the money?

The money is sitting in an interest-bearing account. We left it there for our grandson when he graduates high school. If my husband had easy access, he’d probably spend it. We had a small funeral and used some of the money then, but the rest is meant for our grandson. He’s not our son’s child but his nephew, and they were very close.
Have you tried registering for online access to the account? You might be able to handle everything online.

No, I haven’t seen that option before. I’ll look into it tomorrow. My husband was handling everything related to the policy and the checks, but now he can’t find them. I usually keep important papers safe, but since the policy wasn’t in my name, I left it to him.
