Is this USAA scam? Should I be worried?

So tonight I got a call from what I thought was USAA’s actual number. It showed the same number and even had their name underneath when the call popped up. For some background, I don’t have a USAA account at all. I’ve been getting text messages all week about suspicious charges over $500, which I ignored thinking they were just scam texts. But tonight, they called again and asked if I was making the transactions. I asked if the account was under my name, and they said yes, then asked when the account was opened and hung up. Is this normal?

If you don’t have an account with USAA, why are you even responding to calls or texts from ‘USAA’? I get emails from ‘Wells Fargo,’ but I know I’ve never had an account with them, so I just delete them. Definitely a scam. To be sure, you should call USAA yourself, but only using the number listed on their website.

To be honest, I’m 18 and didn’t know that scammers could spoof real company numbers. I answered because it looked like their ‘real’ number. But I didn’t give any info out, I know better than that.

@Arden
With the right tech, scammers can fake any number to make it look like it’s from USAA, Transunion, or even the White House. I’ve had my phone number for years, and I get calls from my own area code that are always spam. If I don’t know the number, I just don’t answer.

@Arden
It’s called caller-ID spoofing. Scammers do it all the time with automated software.

I’ve even gotten calls… from myself! Those are fun!

That’s definitely a scam. USAA doesn’t call you, they only text. You can always call them yourself if you need to check.

Why worry? Just block the number and move on.

100% scam. Call the fraud department tomorrow.

If you’re not sure, just call USAA directly and check.

Get your free credit report and check for anything suspicious.

It’s a scam. Scammers can spoof caller IDs to look like anyone’s number, even your parents’. Stay safe and protect your info.

Look up USAA’s phone number online. Call them and ask for the fraud department. Let them know what happened and ask them to check if you have any accounts with them using your SSN. Then, set up a free credit report with all three bureaus – TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. After that, lock or freeze your credit with them.

I can’t believe you need to ask that. Of course, it’s a scam.

Bro, get a Google Pixel for call screening, and all those scam calls and texts will stop. The scammer was probably just testing to see if you’d answer. Now that you did, expect more calls.
