Is it worth it to get a lawyer after a car accident?

Hi everyone, first time posting here. I’ve been following others’ posts and learning as I go. I noticed that a lot of people discuss when it’s recommended to get a lawyer after a car accident. Can anyone clarify when that’s actually necessary? Does it depend on the injury level, who’s involved, or other factors?

My minor son and I were in a T-bone accident a few months back. Since it was my first experience like this, I got a lawyer to help us out. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

It’s not always a clear decision, but the severity of the injuries and who you’re dealing with matters (like personal auto insurance vs. commercial). If it’s just soft tissue, maybe not worth it, as it’ll just lead to more bills.

But if it’s something more serious like broken bones or permanent issues, a lawyer could be helpful. Some folks prefer having someone else handle it altogether, even if they’re capable.

This is one of the best responses I’ve seen here in a while. Really gets to the point.

Thanks! I really appreciate it. Dealing with all this has been overwhelming.

@EquityElaine
Good advice here.

Good answer! My lawyer took a huge chunk out of my settlement though. I went through the process because it was too stressful alone. In the end, I ended up with just enough to cover some bills. Felt like it wasn’t really worth it.

@Parker
It sounds like a rough experience. The lawyer’s percentage should be closer to 33%. If it’s more, you might’ve gotten a bad deal. But if it got you more than handling it alone, maybe it wasn’t totally a loss.

@Omar
It was tough. I thought hiring one would make it all simpler. Instead, I’m left struggling to cover what’s left. I trusted it was the best move, but now I wonder.

Same here. They lowballed my case, so I had to negotiate more myself.

@Omar
Often, they’ll take a percentage and add expenses. Lawyers can end up with more than you expect.

It does end up being a chunk, but they handle things like evidence collection, which can be a lifesaver in complex cases.

@Parker
Sometimes lawyers add a lot of fees that don’t seem fair, honestly.

@Rory
Thanks so much for your input! I’m the one more hurt, with concussions and back pain. It’s all been a learning process.

Depending on where you are, your son’s claim may need court approval since he’s a minor. Your lawyer can help with that.

@Rory
That’s helpful to know! The guy who hit us didn’t have a license but was covered under his business insurance. Does that change anything?

Just curious if his lack of license impacts our case.

@EquityElaine
It’s been an ordeal, and I just want to be sure we’re covered.

Wondering if anyone else had experience with a lawyer in similar cases?

Seems like a hot topic here.

In cases where liability is disputed or it’s hard to manage, a lawyer can handle the negotiations and medical bills. They know the legal side, so you don’t risk messing it up yourself.
