Is $222.48 too much for car insurance?

I’ve been paying $180.71 a month for my 2007 Chevy Impala for the past two years, and I thought that was a pretty good deal. Today, I saw my insurance took $222.48 out of my account instead. That’s a $42 jump, and I’m not sure why.

I did get a speeding ticket in May for going 65 in a 50, but my agent said it wouldn’t lead to an increase, just that I wouldn’t qualify for a discount. She never mentioned the rate going up.

Is $222.48 still a reasonable amount? I’m 19, and this is my first time dealing with an insurance price increase. I didn’t get any renewal packet or warning about the change. Can companies just raise the rates without notifying you? I’d appreciate your advice.

It depends. In some places, that’s a pretty solid rate. What area are you in?

I’m in Ontario, Canada. Not the states.

Did you check the renewal packet for your new rates? That’s where they usually outline any changes. If you’re unhappy, shop around and compare quotes, but make sure to disclose the speeding ticket upfront.

I didn’t get a renewal packet this year. Last year, they sent me a list of what I’d pay each month for 2024, but I haven’t seen anything this time around.

You should have called them to confirm your renewal details. If you don’t get an updated policy, you could end up driving without valid coverage.

It honestly slipped my mind. Life’s been hectic lately. My insurance automatically renews unless I tell them otherwise, so I didn’t think to worry about it.

Policies have an end date, even if they renew automatically. It’s important to keep track of those dates so you’re not caught off guard if something changes.

@West
I see what you mean now. I guess I misunderstood how it works. Do you think $222.48 is a fair rate, though? I’ve seen quotes ranging from $216 to over $300, but I’m not sure what’s considered good.

@Vann
It sounds reasonable for your age and car. Rates for younger drivers are usually higher. If you’ve already shopped around and this is close to the lowest quote, it might be worth sticking with your current policy.
