I’m looking into intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for addiction treatment and wondering how much it typically costs with insurance. Does anyone have experience with how much insurance usually covers for IOP?
IOP costs can range between $3,000 to $10,000 without insurance, but a lot of private insurance plans cover a good chunk of it. It really depends on your insurance provider and the policy you have. You’ll still likely have to pay a deductible, though.

Thanks, that’s helpful. I’ll check with my insurance and see what they cover. Did you have to pay a lot out of pocket?

I had to pay my deductible, which was a few hundred bucks, but insurance covered most of the rest. They even covered part of the travel costs since I went out of state for the program.
I went through an IOP last year, and insurance covered about 80% of it. I still had to pay for a couple of things like some of the meds and a portion of the therapy sessions, but overall it wasn’t too bad.
If you don’t have great insurance or a high deductible, a lot of treatment centers offer payment plans or sliding scale fees based on your income. It’s worth asking about financing options if you’re worried about the cost.
@Val
Yeah, my treatment center had a sliding scale option. It made it way more affordable, especially since my insurance didn’t cover everything.
Don’t forget to check if your insurance requires pre-approval for IOP. Mine did, and it slowed down the process a bit until it got approved. Once it was, they covered about 70% of the costs.
Also, make sure you know if detox is included in the program. That can add to the cost if it’s not covered by insurance or the treatment center. Detox alone can run anywhere from $300-$800 a day, so it adds up fast.
