I’m picking up a 2021 used Model 3 this Friday and want to get Tesla insurance beforehand, but I’m running into issues. When I try entering the VIN in the Tesla app, it says it’s invalid. I assume it’s because I’m not listed as the owner yet. Is the ownership transfer process quick enough to handle at pickup so I can insure the car for the drive home? My current car is insured with Hagerty, but it’s a classic, so I’m not sure if it will cover me. Any advice would be great!
You can probably sign up instantly once the car is in your name. Most insurance companies give you a grace period, like 7 days, to update them about a new car. Check with your current insurer just in case.
Don’t stress. If Tesla insurance is available in your state, you can sign up as soon as the car is linked to your Tesla app. Once ownership is transferred, just log in, select your coverage, add driver info, and enter a credit card. It activates immediately.
I’m running into the same issue. Did you figure out a solution?

Yeah, I just waited until I picked up the car. The salesperson transferred ownership to me in the Tesla app right at the dealership. Then I signed up for Tesla insurance on the spot—it took about five minutes to activate.

I’m thinking of getting a used Tesla too. How much does Tesla insurance cost if I want full coverage?

It depends, but I pay around $115 per month for full coverage. Your rate might vary based on location and driving history.
