How can I get car insurance after a long lapse in coverage? Any advice or strategies that have worked for you?

Hey everyone, I need some advice. We had a major oversight and forgot to renew our car insurance, which led to our policy lapsing. Progressive already turned down our application for a new policy because of this lapse. Now, my fiancé’s license is suspended, and our car got impounded after we were pulled over today. The officer said we need proof of insurance and registration to retrieve it. I’m not sure what steps to take to resolve this. Any ideas?

Wow, that’s a tough situation. New York takes uninsured vehicles very seriously. Your first priority should be getting insured immediately to stop any further issues. Contact a broker who can help you access the assigned risk pool (NYAIP). They should be able to get you covered, although the premium might be quite high.

It’s been a while since I dealt with NYAIP for personal auto, so you’ll need to discuss the next steps with the broker. From what I remember, you may face a suspension period equivalent to the time you were uninsured, but this suspension typically starts once you’re insured again.

You are going to have to call someone like Progressive or Geico who doesn’t care about past history. Being in NY and a 2 year lapse, you will be paying out the nose, but you should be able to purchase a policy and cancel it when you sell the car.

Since it is already damaged, do not purchase comprehensive and collision. NY insurers usually require inspections and yours will not pass with unrepaired damage. I hope you don’t have a loan on it still.
