How can I afford $800 a month for car insurance?

I’m 18 and just started learning how to drive. I’m also saving up for a car. I went online to get an insurance quote so I could plan my expenses, and most of the quotes came out to around $800 a month. How is anyone supposed to afford that? Someone suggested I put my car under a relative’s insurance, but I found out that’s considered insurance fraud. What kind of system is this? How can I get around it legally? There’s no way I can pay that with all my other bills. I can’t keep using rideshares either, and public transportation where I live is unreliable and unsafe. It’s also making it hard for me to work more hours.

If you live at the same address, you could put the car in their name and be added as an additional driver on the policy. That’s not insurance fraud. Also, you could look at insurance brokers. They can get quotes from different companies that you may not find online. But yeah, insurance for your age group is always expensive.

Get an old, cheap car and just carry liability insurance.

The liability part is what’s expensive for teenage males.

That’s why it’s better to get a car that doesn’t need extra coverage like collision and comprehensive. Collision is also expensive for young drivers.

Yeah, but liability is the only thing required by law in most places. If you get a cheap car and drive safely, you can get by with liability only.

It’s crazy how they charge more just because you’re male. They wouldn’t do that with health insurance!

It’s based on statistics, not sexism.

It doesn’t even need to be that old. Just get something affordable enough that you don’t need to carry full coverage. I drive a 2008 Ford Escape that’s in great condition and didn’t cost much.

If you live with a parent, they can add you to their insurance and let you drive a car registered in their name. If you get a car registered in your name, you’ll need your own policy. Unfortunately, $800 a month sounds about right for a young male driver depending on the car.

I think it depends on the insurance. I’ve heard of companies like Allstate covering a car someone else owns as long as the driver lives in the same house.

Yeah, it can vary by state and insurance company. In the northeast, most of the companies I work with require the registered owner to be on the policy.

I’ve got two teens on my insurance, and Progressive was the cheapest for us. It was literally half the price compared to other quotes, and we have a WRX and a teenage son. We pay $350 a month for two cars and four drivers.

That’s amazing. What state are you in?

We have 50/100/50 coverage with a $500 deductible. We don’t have rental coverage but we do have loan payoff on the WRX. The other car is a 2011 Accord. Both are manual transmission.

Insurance rates can vary so much. Some people pay $100 a month with similar coverage, while others pay $1,000. It all depends on the person’s situation—like young drivers, bad credit, no current insurance, or living in certain states. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to insurance.

Exactly!
