Fraud again… third time in 6 weeks. Anyone else having issues?

USAA called me today about a potential account takeover. Luckily, no money was taken this time, but they told me the scammers had my birthday and member number. They couldn’t get past verification steps, though.

Later, I accidentally clicked on my credit card account and saw an $11,850.25 pending charge I didn’t make. While I was on the phone with USAA, two more charges for $1,899.25 were declined. Clearly, they’re actively trying to use my account.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to change your USAA member number? I’ve already changed my passwords, PIN, and username three times since September, but this keeps happening. I’m seriously considering closing all my accounts and moving everything to Navy Federal. Any advice?

You can deactivate the card through the app.

Yeah, I already did that, but it didn’t stop them from trying to use it.

This week alone, I’ve had two calls from someone pretending to be USAA fraud prevention. They spoofed the USAA phone number and claimed there was a Zelle attempt. When I started asking questions, they hung up. Best advice: don’t answer or hang up and call USAA directly from the app.

@Cody
Same here. They’re definitely spoofing USAA’s number.

@Cody
USAA never called me. They just sent a text asking if the charges were valid. I called them when I saw the text.

Are you sure it was actually USAA that called you?

The person who posted this mentioned in another comment that they were scammed earlier this year by a fake USAA call. That might’ve been what started all of this.

Click on the card, then go to ‘My Account and Card.’ You’ll see options to block or replace it there.

I did that already, but they somehow sent a duplicate card to Hollywood, FL, not my address. How does USAA let that happen three times? I’m done.

@Jordan
It could be someone on the inside with database access. I’ve worked in IT for years, and it happens more often than people think.

That’s what I’ve been leaning toward. Last time they sent a card to the wrong address, and $5,500 was taken.

Not USAA, but I had a similar issue with an Alaska Airlines card. Someone charged it before I even received it.

USAA has been in trouble before for issues like this. The OCC issued a cease-and-desist order against them recently for not fixing security problems from previous orders in 2019 and 2022. Honestly, it’s hard to trust them anymore.

@Lyric
Yeah, I think I’m done.

@Lyric
Aren’t they sort of subsidized by the government like Western Union?

Not at all.

I went through something similar. Fraud drained my accounts twice in two weeks. After 30 years with USAA, I switched everything to Navy Federal. It’s a hassle, but it might be worth it for peace of mind.

USAA has had issues like this for years. They’ve been fined and issued orders to fix their security flaws, but it seems nothing changes. I experienced fraud years ago, stuck with them, but I’m finally done after dealing with another major issue recently.

Do you use SMS for two-factor authentication? Scammers can clone your phone number and get the codes that way. You might want to switch to an authenticator app instead.
