Do teachers need liability insurance or is school coverage enough?

I’ve heard that even if you’re covered by your school’s insurance, you might still need your own. Does anyone know if that’s true? I’m a teacher, and I thought school insurance would cover everything, but I’m starting to wonder if I should get extra protection. Any advice?

Yeah, I heard that too. I’m a tutor, and my school’s policy doesn’t really cover me. I looked into getting my own Professional Liability insurance. It covers things like negligence or if a student’s parent sues you. I pay about $116 a year for it. Definitely gives me peace of mind.

Wait, what exactly does ‘negligence’ mean in this case? Like if a student gets hurt, or is it more about giving wrong advice?

It’s both. If a student gets injured under your supervision, you could be sued for negligence. It also covers stuff like giving bad advice. I know someone who got sued because a parent claimed their kid’s grades suffered from the teacher’s bad guidance.

My association actually includes liability insurance in the membership, so I didn’t have to buy anything extra. If you’re part of something like the National Education Association, check if they offer it. It could save you some money.

@Voss
Good point. I’m part of an education association, but I didn’t realize they might offer liability insurance. I’ll have to look into that!

I run my own tutoring business and had to get General Liability insurance too. It’s especially important if you’re working with students outside of a school, like in their homes. Accidents happen, and you don’t want to be stuck paying for someone’s medical bills.

So, if I’m just teaching at school, would I still need that? Or is it only for people running their own businesses?

If you’re just working in a school, you might not need it unless you’re doing side gigs. The school’s insurance should cover most things that happen during your regular job, but it might not protect you fully. I’d check your policy just to be sure.

If you’re teaching yoga or other extracurricular stuff, you definitely want your own policy. A student could get hurt during class, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Totally agree! I’m a yoga teacher and have a separate liability policy for that. It covers stuff like accidents during class, and it’s worth every penny.
