I’m asking about homeowners insurance. I know you can get a discount for having no claims in the last five years. But if you file a claim and it’s denied, does that still make you lose the discount? Also, if denied claims don’t pay out, do they still cause your rates to go up at renewal?
Yes, even if it’s denied, it’s still treated as a claim and will show up on your history.
Yes.
Yes. It’s more common with auto insurance to see zero paid claims, but it’s the same idea here.

Actually, I don’t think state matters here. I checked and you only lose the claims-free discount if it’s a chargeable loss. For it to count as chargeable, there would need to be a payout over $500, or $1,000 if you’re in New York.
@Reese
I’m in Virginia. There wasn’t a payout, and honestly, it was a mistake on my part to file the claim. I still have the discount, but I was thinking it might disappear at renewal based on what I’ve read and what others here are saying.
@Dariel
I work for USAA P&C, and I just checked our database. Since it wasn’t a chargeable loss, you won’t lose the discount. You should still see it on your renewal.

That’s a relief! I really appreciate you checking. Thank you so much!
@Dariel
You’re welcome

Keep in mind, though, it could still affect insurability if you decide to switch insurance companies.
