Direct Auto took over my Esurance policy without my okay and now they’re charging my card even though I went with Geico

I’m really upset about this.

You’d think they would need some kind of approval before doing this. I also read they might charge early cancellation fees?

Has anyone dealt with this and got their money back?

They assume if you don’t reply, you want the insurance. A lot of people don’t read these things, then cancel and end up without coverage, and when something happens, they’re upset.

Call them and show you’ve already got insurance elsewhere.

@Christine4 I’ve deleted the emails and shredded the letters from Esurance, so I don’t have proof. Esurance told me I needed to create an account with Direct Auto if I didn’t want coverage issues. I thought not doing it would mean no policy.

You’re right, I’ll call them tomorrow. Do you think they’ll charge an early cancellation fee?

@Ameliascarlet Did you call and cancel or just ignore the emails and letters?

@madisonwilson They told me my policy was ending on a certain date and if I wanted to stay with their partners, I needed to make an account before that date.

@Ameliascarlet They probably meant you’d be able to manage everything online.

It’s not an interruption unless you’re without an account. They can’t just cancel you without sending a letter or you reaching out to them first.

@Christine4 From what I’ve read, they canceled everyone in California and passed our info to another company.

Would you have preferred they just didn’t renew your policy? You would have gotten a notice 60 days before your insurance ran out.

Companies buy other companies all the time, and they don’t tell you right away. Sometimes it’s years before you know.

@Steve For me, Esurance did give notice of non-renewal. But they also sent my info to Direct Auto and gave me a new policy that I had to accept.

@Helgabuttner Same here. I thought by not accepting it, I wouldn’t be included. Glad I’m not the only one who was confused.

@Steve Yeah, I would’ve preferred that. I got a bunch of notices, and they all made me think I had to do something for renewal. I thought doing nothing meant no renewal.

Esurance decided to drop all their California customers and sent us to Direct Auto. That’s what I understand, anyway.

I had something like this happen with surprise charges. It’s really frustrating. For me, calling customer service and explaining helped. They usually fix things quickly once you tell them what’s going on. Make sure to watch your credit card and dispute any charges if needed. I had to be persistent, but I got a refund eventually. Hang in there!

This happened to me last year. Direct Auto took over without telling me and charged my card. I called them and they reversed the charges and canceled the policy without a fee. I’d suggest calling them and explaining what happened. Keep records in case you need them later. Good luck, hope it works out for you soon!

If you have proof of your new insurance, they should be able to backdate the cancellation and refund you from when your new policy started.
