Could my stepdaughter be covered under permissive use?

Would my stepdaughter be able to be covered under permissive use? She might drive our car once or twice a month to go to the store. She lives with her mom full time and is on their car insurance policy. I don’t see why I should pay hundreds more a month to add her to ours when she’s only going to the store every other Saturday. No driving for school or work, no highway driving, and usually within 5 miles of the house.

Yes, she would be covered under permissive use as long as she doesn’t live in your household full time and is listed on another policy. Just keep in mind that if she gets into an accident, the claim will go against your insurance, not hers. So make sure she’s driving safely!

All licensed members of your household need to be listed on your policy. This is because they have access to your vehicles and could drive them, even just once. Not doing so could be seen as fraud.

You should contact USAA directly to clarify. Permissive use is usually for someone who doesn’t live with you but uses your car for a short time.

I was planning to talk to them, of course, but I was just curious if anyone here has had experience with this situation.

Insurance policies aren’t one-size-fits-all, so it’s best to check directly with them.
