Buying home with 24 year old original roof. No damage/leaks, but worried about insurance

How would you respond to this?

The roof is good, the inspector remarked, no leaks, no missing shingles, just ancient.

I fear that homeowners insurance will want it replaced before to issuing us a coverage, or even worse, that they will provide us a policy only to later claim that the item needs to be replaced following the closing.

Is it worthwhile to haggle over this with the sellers? They may just as easily assume that the roof is good as it is right now.

Worth requesting half the price?

It will be difficult to get insurance, and you will be responsible for replacing it while you own it. Are you able to spend $15–20k on a new roof? How much do you really desire this house?

@Julia If we proceed, we will undoubtedly need to replace it sooner rather than later.

We really want the house, therefore I really believe we are kind of screwed and that we should start saving money for a replacement as soon as possible.
