Anyone else noticed USAA sharing data with Facebook?

This isn’t something I’m just wondering about. I checked my Facebook account under “Your activity off Meta technologies” and saw that USAA shared my info with Facebook five times last year. I never gave them permission to do this.

Seriously, USAA? I thought you were one of the good companies.

USAA has a Facebook tracking pixel on their website to collect info about visitors. Unless you live in California, they don’t need your permission for this.

You could try reaching out to your senators or representatives about privacy laws, but there isn’t much protection outside of California.

If you want to stop this, you need to change your settings:

  1. Go to USAA.com and log in.
  2. Click on Home.
  3. Select Profile (the white circle next to “Log Off”).
  4. Go to Communication Preferences.
  5. Under Marketing and Privacy, find the option that says “Can share your personal information to market other USAA products to you” (it’s near the bottom).
  6. Set it to “No.”

It’s about money. Plain and simple.

Every bank has a privacy policy they’re required to share. You’ll find it on USAA’s website, and it will list who they share info with. You don’t need to give permission for most of it, but some sharing can be opted out of. The disclosure will explain how.

When you joined Facebook, you agreed to let them track you. USAA is just using what’s already available.

I totally disagree. Just because I have a Facebook account doesn’t mean USAA should do something shady like this. You’re basically excusing bad behavior.

By the way, I found out about this while trying to delete my Facebook account.

Also, none of the other financial companies I use—banks, brokers, insurance—have shared my data with Facebook. It’s only USAA, along with a few small online shops.

@Hadley
You might want to check your Facebook settings because they allow tracking pretty much everywhere. That’s why I deleted all my Meta accounts about a year ago.

It’s not Facebook’s tracking this time. USAA set their account settings to opt me in for this without asking. I’ve had an account with them since before Facebook even existed, and they didn’t notify me when they made this change.

@Hadley
The issue is probably with off-Facebook activity tracking. You can find out more about disabling it here: https://allaboutcookies.org/how-to-turn-off-facebook-tracking.

@Shan
I’ve already disabled all the tracking options. The only thing left was something on USAA’s side. I also use ad blockers all the time, so it’s not that.

@Hadley
I’m confused about what setting on USAA’s site allows this. Can you explain? I checked their privacy options, and it mostly talks about internal sharing between their banking, insurance, and discount services.

They also claim, “We don’t sell your information. We only share it as permitted by law for everyday business purposes.” What exactly does “everyday business purposes” even mean?

@Whitney
If you want to turn this off, here’s how you can do it:

  1. Go to USAA.com and log in.
  2. Click on Home.
  3. Select Profile (the white circle next to “Log Off”).
  4. Go to Communication Preferences.
  5. Under Marketing and Privacy, find the option that says “Can share your personal information to market other USAA products to you” (near the bottom).
